GENCI has received the resolution proposal from the Director General of Energy Transition and Circular Economy of the Community of Madrid granting it the sole authorisation as an EPR system for commercial and industrial packaging, in accordance with the provisions of RD 1055/2022, of December 27, on packaging and packaging waste. GENCI has formally notified the General Directorat e of Energy Transition and Circular Economy that it will not make any objections to the resolution proposal. Therefore, GENCI already has the sole authorisation to operate, throughout the national territory, as a EPR system for commercial and industrial packaging.
RD 1055/2022, enacted with the aim of improving the management of packaging waste and reducing its environmental impact, establishes a series of obligations for companies that introduce packaging for the first time in the Spanish market. Among them, the application of the Extended Producer Responsibility regime to professional packaging from 01/01/2025. From that date, any company that puts its products on the Spanish market using any type of packaging must correctly finance and organize the management of waste from these containers.
In order to respond to the EPR obligations, RD 1055/2022 establishes that these must be addressed through EPR Systems, which can be individual or collective. GENCI is a collective system that has been operating since 2022 in the Balearic Islands
“GENCI guarantees that all companies affected by RD 1055/2022 will comply with their RAP obligations, ensuring the management of industrial and commercial packaging waste in an agile and efficient manner,” Eduardo de Lecea, general manager of GENCI
